Sent: Fatima’s UK Kit

April 18, 2013 at 8:05 am

You all remember Fatima? She sent me a great package full of treats & a lovely letter some time ago.

I was informed that Fatima will be going to fabulous London in May. She is crazy about everything UK-related, a true Anglophile. This is the first time she is going to the UK & I wanted to send her something nice. At first, I only wanted to send her a Crumpled City Map of London, but I went a little overboard.

Crumpled City Maps are awesome. These are made from Tyvek, which looks like paper but it really isn’t. It’s a waterproof, indestructable material, on which you can write, protect yourself from the rain, use as a picknick plaid and even throw in the washing machine.

But as it turned out, the postage box was still pretty empty with just the map in it. So I found some nice London-themed goodies to go along. Because, who would go to London without an UK kit? Exactly, noone in their right mind.

I bought a Moleskine and stamped it with a London stamp. Also some handmade Jane Austen soap from PenandCandle. Some UK postcards from Zazzle, half a paper pad, luggage tags & a set of bookmarks from the All Aboard collection from Papermania. A set of 4 sheets of UK themed postal stickers from Sellzang. Some die cuts from the Chronology collection , a facemask & a teabag. On the last minute I made a bracelet with a cute brass key, put it in an apothecary bottle, adorned it with a 7Gypsies bottle label and distressed it with Distress Ink (Ranger).

I had some kraftpaper laying around, so I decorated it with London themed stamps (a crown, a Victorian chair) from the Printery stamp set (Prima Marketing, Inc). To my surprise, everything fit into the box. And it is still small enough to fit through a mailslot!

I painted the box black, cut out an opening flap and stuck 4 photocorners by Tim Holtz on the inside. I slid a Pride & Prejudice postcard (Zazzle) in to cover the backside of the brads I used on the top of the box.

As I said, I used a lot of Graphic45 stickers on the front, as well as some Bo Bunny brads (Camp a Lot), a brass key and gears from the Chronology collection (Papermania), a wooden pocket watch (which I’ve painted black, also from Prima Marketing), some stickers from the Idea-ology Lost & Found collection (Salvage Stickers) & a sticker of Jetta Goudal I found in a magazine.

Next, the box needed to be secure for posting. So I wrapped it in brown kraft paper, stamped it up and used some rubb-ons from 7Gypsies.

I hope the box will arive safely. I wanted to wait a little longer before shipping this project, because May is still a month away. But Fatima started talking about buying a map of London & I tried to talk her out of it (because I had my Crumpled City Map for her). Must have been weird for her. All excited telling me about buying a map to highlight the must-see spots & here I am saying she should wait..

Anyhoo, onto the pictures!

Received: Tiny Presents for a Bad Day

April 5, 2013 at 3:37 pm

When I got home, there was a box on the doormat. It wouldn’t fit through the mailslot, I presumed.

It was from Greece. My mind was racing, because I didn’t order anything on Etsy or eBay…

I opened it… and there it was! A box full of cutely wrapped presents! And then I remembered; I joined in on a swap on Swap-Bot.com called “Tiny Presents for a Bad Day”. What a surprise!

1

These was a cute note from Athanasia, she made this beautiful surprise for me. And since I was too eager, I already unwrapped a present.

It had beautiful papers in it.. with my address on it! Perfect for snailmailing! And also these awesome Alice in Wonderland tags! Aren’t they stunning?
If this first present is a prelude on all the awesome things Athanasia has wrapped for me, I’m in for a treat!

Better get started on my box..

Sent: Around the World in.. two days?

April 1, 2013 at 10:50 am

‘T was my grandma’s 91st birthday yesterday, so I decided to give a pair of my handmade earrings. She was very surprised, but: she doesn’t have her ears pierced. So, I promised her to make her a necklace & sent it to her per mail (she doesn’t live so closeby, so mail it was).

I sent her a nice card & the necklace. Because I can never sent mail without decorating the envelope, I decided to make it seem like it had traveled the world.

Distressed the envelope with Distress Ink (tea dye), put stamps on it from India, New York, Cuba, Poland and ofcourse Holland. I stamped it with postal stamps, wrote the address on it in Hindi, Arabic & Chinese and put on some fingerprints. I sealed it with a wax seal on the back.
Now here’s hoping it will reach her safely…

Finds: yay for Ikea!

March 13, 2013 at 11:37 am

Ikea; I never go there. Not because I don’t like it, but because it is so far away. I don’t have a car, so when I go I want to buy everything, but I have to rely on public transportation, so one can not take a whole bunch of stuff.

But, yesterday I went! And what a trip it was! They had a lot of cool things, but I had to control myself. Apparantly, Ikea also picked up on the revival of steampunk, because they currently sell a beautiful set of steampunk animal prints on heavy cardstock. They can be used as postcards, but also to be framed. Look at the cute steampunk kitty!

I couldn’t resist and why should I, they were only 2,50 euro (about $2) for a set of 5. I also picked up some other cards, botanical and art cards with birds. And a cool pillow with a map on it! And a clock. Wasn’t really sure about the clock, but it’s beginning to grow on me. Well, I also bought some more stuff (for organising and storage), but it’s not worth blogging about.

Inspiration: distressing the tropical travelogue

March 7, 2013 at 10:15 am

So yeah, what’s this title about?

Well, recently I watched some YouTube videos on Distress Ink. I’ve been seeing them everywhere lately and I just wanted to know what the fuss is. What I’ve learned: Distress Ink is very special. And it reacts to water. And it is really special.

Now, I’m really not into making 3d cards or the whimsical, flowery stationary. I like my paper old, my envelopes brown and my stickers antique.

But I’ve read some things about Distress Ink, which comes in different colors (for example “Old Photo” & “Tea Dye”), which sparked my imagination. Could you use this stuff to fake an antique look? Make white envelopes look old? Make manilla tags antique?

Distress Ink

Why yes, you can. Excitement!

I’ve learned that you will need a pad of Distress Ink (in my case I only need one color, I just want to “antique” things up) and an applicator. This applicator is a wooden handle with a felt pad. You just have to rub the ink from the corners inward. The corner will be darker and the stain will be lighter, the more you move inward.

So, I got me a pad of Distress Ink. I thought the “Tea Dye” would be perfect. I asked the saleswoman about the applicator, but she had a better idea. Just use a scourer and cut into a square piece!

In the video I saw, they also used a wipeable mat as a workspace. I  don’t want to spend $20 on something I would rarely use. So I just put clear tape on my working space. Problem solved, bucks saved, ha!

A while ago, I also got me a beautiful scrappaper. It is called Tropical Travelogue (Botanica) by 45Graphics. I don’t do scrapbooking. A lot of stuff that I would use if I wanted it, is not available. Scrapbooking is just not my thing. Everything is glittery, cartoony, childish.. I don’t like it.

But 45Graphics makes a lot of cool, antique supplies. One of their paper packs is called “Olde Curiosity Shoppe”! So if you are like me and having a hard time finding your favorite paper, have a look on their website here.

And then it hit me; distress the Tropical Travelogue! So, using my papercutting machine (yes, I have one. Don’t ask why.) I cut all the cards on the paper and practised the distressing on the back. In case I would screw things up.

It went quite well, so I also did the foreground, but only one some. Here are the pictures, including a before and after pic of the backside. I will use the shell patterned paper to make envelopes & maybe distress them too. Maybe.

Received: postcard from Mariya

March 5, 2013 at 5:50 pm

Caught me completely off-guard: a lovely postcard from Mariya! Now, I don’t list my Postcrossing receivals here, since there are too many (and not all of them worth mentioning…).

But this time was different. You see, I sent Mariya a card (which I loved, but I felt like she deserved it). And the deal is: you get one back from someone else.

But.. she sent me a “thank you” card! So, you could imagine my surprise! And since I send a lot of cards to Russia, I had to find out from who it came first. But I did, so I am going to send her a message thanking her for the lovely card. It features her town, before the Soviet period. Look how old and destroyed this card looks! I love it!

Inspiration: making envelopes out of maps

March 5, 2013 at 5:20 pm

Hardly original or new, I made these little map envelopes. I bought me some envelope templates a year ago, meaning to sell them, but never got to it. And seeing so much of these templates on other blogs, gave me the inspiration (or motivation) to finally try to make some envelopes myself.

I bought an old map of a province in the Netherlands (Friesland), which is connected to the North Sea and has some pretty islands. The Netherlands has 8 islands (excluding the Caribbean ones), of which 3 are uninhabited. I visited one of them a couple of years ago, Texel (on the picture). It was beautiful & I would love to go back. Go there if you can!

So, I could get 12 envelopes out of the map with the mini envelope template (didn’t use the big one). I moved the template around a bit, so I could get the prettiest parts on the envelopes.

It wasn’t much work & it was a nice way to spend an afternoon. Oh, and here is a pic. Just to give you an idea. Pick up the wooden templates on eBay or Etsy on the cheap!

Sent: mail to Rossi

March 4, 2013 at 8:19 am

I was invited by Rossi to do a private swap on Swap-Bot. Rossi seemed very nice, she wanted to help my rating get up, because I had none!

So, I went first. I sent her a big envelope with a bracelet, vegan sandwich recipes, a notebook with a swallow on it, a little bag with buttons, an old postcard, some stamps and a very old playing game card. Rossi has let me know that she was very happy with the package!

Received: mail from Kimberlee

March 3, 2013 at 8:53 am

What a surprise it was! There was a cute little envelope in my mailbox, sent by my friend from Interpals: Kimberlee. She told me she was kind of new to snailmailing, but she sent me a very sweet package.

It was a cute envelope, decorated with a cute floral washi tape. Inside there was a teabag (I am going to drink it right now!), a cute bunting she made herself with the same washitape, some kind of lemonade which I should stir with water (never had it, so very excited!), a beautiful letter on pretty cardstock, sticky notes with a cat on it (cute), a very old bonbon foil wrapping & a nice 3d flower paper.

Have a look at the pictures!
